Poland in International Organization

From the very beginning Poland adopted a very active foreign policy, which mostly meant being on friendly diplomatic and economic terms with other countries.

The current foreign policy is double-track. On one hand we are becoming strongly involved in the structures of the EU, and on the other hand we participate in the actions of various international organizations, which the Republic of Poland is a part of.

The activity of the Polish government comes, among other things, in:

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) NATO is an alliance of the independent countries of Western Europe, the USA and Canada contracted on 4 April 1949. It is a political-military organization in the defensive character and its fundamental goal is military help in the event of an attack on one of the countries that is a member of the treaty. Poland joint NATO in 1999.

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Its fundamental goal is a drive for reaching the highest economic growth, the highest possible levels of employment and living standard, as well as the financial stability, freedom of international exchange and assistance to the least developed countries. Poland has been a member of OECD since 1998.

Baltic States Council, which is the local forum of cooperation between the Baltic States; this organization has existed since 1992. It includes: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Germany, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden. Its main task is the coordination of the activities within the scope of the preservation of the natural environment of the Baltic Sea, development of the power and shipping infrastructure, as well as tightening the bonds of cooperation in this matter with the EU.

World Trade Organization (WTO), whose basic aim is the liberalization of the international trade, reduction of duties, adoption of the pro-commercial invest policy. Poland was one of the founders of the WTO and ratified an appropriate agreement in 1995.

Central-European Free Trade Area (CEFTA); this organization was established on the ground of an agreement signed on 21 December 1992 in Cracow. Originally the signatories of the agreement were three countries: Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary. At present CEFTA has a lot wider range. The goal of the agreement is gradual exemption from duties in trading between the EU members.

The Council of Europe, which is an intergovernmental organization. Poland has been a member since 1991.

The essential aims of the Council are:

  • the protection of human rights, democracy and law government,
  • acting for building the awareness and developing the cultural and regional identity,
  • searching for the ways of solving current social problems, among other things: discrimination, lack of tolerance, environmental threats, ethical aspects of genetic engineering, AIDS, drug addiction, crime,
  • taking actions in order to consolidate the European democracy.

International Monetary Fund, whose tasks are: supporting the monetary cooperation on the international level, creating conditions for regulations of current settlements in the international trade, providing support in liquidating the insolvency, monitoring the facility of financial systems of the members, making efforts in order to regulate the development and growth of the international trade. Poland has been a member of the IMF since 1986.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), that was established in London in 1945 by 44 countries (including Poland). The main goal of this organization is to keep the peace and safety through the activities in the area of education and culture of particular members, cultural exchange and mutual culture recognition.
